Chapter - 15

Ritam, a student of class VII, seemed disturbed for quite some time. He was repeatedly trying to attract Mohidhar's attention by putting up his hands. At last, Mohidhar looked at him and said. "Well, you have heard my words till now, if any student wants to say something, you may." Ritam started to say, "Sir, you have told that the Earth is very ill, we have to help her recover and be healthy. Well sir, if any of our family members or friends become ill, then we pray to God to cure that person and make him well. Sir, if we pray to God for the Earth, wholeheartedly request him, Dear God please heal our Mother Earth and make her well; won't he listen to us?"
Mohidhar laughed at Ritam's words and said affectionately, "No, he won't listen. Why should he? He has gifted the Earth and everything in the Earth that is beautiful to the Creatures of the Earth. He has also given the responsibility to keep the Earth well and healthy - to human beings, the greatest creatures on Earth. It is now our duty to save the Earth. If our parents, grandfather or anyone else give us gifts, that become ours, and the responsibility to look after those also becomes ours. Isn't it? In the same way, it is our responsibility to look after the well-being of the Earth. God does not have any responsibility in this matter and so he will not listen to our prayers regarding this. We have to do whatever is needed. Loving the Earth, thinking it to be very dear to us, we must take the responsibility to keep the Earth healthy and beautiful. Now tell me one thing - Mother, calmly with a smiling face accepts all your demands and mischiefs but once when being impatient she becomes very angry - then what do you do?" Sayan said, "Sir, and then we become very much afraid. It seems that we cannot recognize her. We stay away from her. When after a long time Mother's anger lessens and she smiles, then only we can recognize her as our own Mother."
"Good, you have expressed your thoughts very nicely". Mohidhar said, "Our Mother Earth is just like that, sometimes she stays calm and quiet, tolerates all injuries inflicted by us with a smiling face just like our own mother. But when that Mother Earth becomes terribly angry and creates earthquakes, severe storms, and devastating floods - all these natural calamities which make us panicked, and then we don't have the courage to strike her back. As Sayan stays away from his angry Mother - we also start to escape as far as possible from Mother Earth. The idea of relating is far-fetched, we then run away to save our lives.
Isn't it true?"
Amiyo said, "Yes sir, it's true."
"Sir, what is the meaning of this word?" At this question of Kallol, Mohidhar smiled and said, "What's the word?"
"Sir, the saviour becomes the devourer."
--"Oh, it has a very easy meaning. Imagine, your Mother gave you ten Rosogollas and told you to eat five and give five to your younger brother. What did you do? You ate five Rosogollas of your quota and without being able to control your greed also ate five Rosogullas of your brother. You were eating one and saying - "this is last; I won't eat anymore." In this way the 'Handi' - container of Rosogollas (syrupy dessert) became empty. What happened next? Mother told you to keep Rosogollas for your brother but you ate those. Then your mother came and punched you on your face."Mohidhar burst into laughter and the boys and girls too”. Then he became serious and said, "This is all about saviour and devourer, but we, the human beings are much more harmful. We are devourers and destroyers at the same time. We are not happy to eat the sweet mangoes of the tree only. We cut and burn the huge mango tree and use it as fuel, as a result, a hazardous and poisonous gas is created by us with which we are taking ourselves everyday towards our destruction. You will find a lot of such examples all around us.
In this world, we, the creatures called human beings are at the same time devourer and destroyer of ourselves."
