Mohidhar spent the whole day at school in strange bewilderment. Of late, most of his nights had been spent sleeplessly. Yesterday was no exception. As he went to sleep at four in the night, he saw a strange dream. He saw that he and Swapan Baul were walking along an unknown and bizarre street. He found that the street along which they were walking and the area all around as far as the eyes could see were covered with sand. There was no sign of any greenery anywhere. No sign of life was visible. A solidly frozen silence reigned there. They were walking silently without speaking to each other. Suddenly Swapan grasped his hand and said, "Look at that Sir!"
Mohidhar looked at the direction to which Swapan signalled. He saw a little far away, rows of huge trees standing on both sides of the street. But all the trees were totally leafless as if the trees were burnt by lightning. Only innumerable objects were hanging from the branches of the trees! Were they bats? Mohidhar could not understand as he was at a distance. Holding Swapan's hand as he walked fast and came near the trees, suddenly it seemed as if someone was hitting his chest with a hammer forcefully. His head felt unsteady. Swapan's broken, frightened voice seemed to be coming from far away - "Sir, these are, these are -" At last Mohidhar could see with his own eyes what those things were. From the branches of the trees were hanging the dead bodies of countless small babies. Mohidhar stared with bulging eyes. He lost his balance slowly and fell down on the ground - oh no, on the sand. He heard Swapan's voice, "Sir, what happened to you?"
Mohidhar woke up and sat on the bed in a hurried and clumsy manner. He was panting heavily and sweating profusely. His body became taut. He did not have the strength left in him to pick up even a glass of water. Looking at the clock he saw it was 7.30 a.m. suddenly he was startled by a heart-rending shrill cry. Someone was crying loudly. Who was crying, where, why? Mohidhar lost all inertness and clumsiness immediately. He got down from the bed, opened the door and came out. He saw Dharitri was opening the front door to go out.
Usually, Mohidhar avoids Dharitri, they are not on talking terms. They are wandering around in their life like two satellites moving in their own orbits.
But today in this situation he could not help asking Dharitri who was crying and what the cry was about. Without giving any answer Dharitri went away hurriedly. Mohidhar followed her. The house of Gokul Das, the mason was nearby. The sound of wailing and crying was coming from their house. Following Dharitri, he came and stood on Gokul's yard. After that whatever he saw with his own eyes and heard himself - made his consciousness numb. He popped down on the side of the yard.
The dead body of a little child wrapped up with a white cloth was lying in the middle of the yard. On one side Gokul was wailing and banging his head and on the other side, Gokul's wife was crying, grasping Gokul's mother. Quite a number of people gathered there. But how did this happen? He saw such a dream at dawn, and then this incident! Why did this incident happen? From the face, it seemed that the baby was between six to eight months old. At such an age his term of staying on the Earth finished! In his lifetime the baby did not get the chance to do any crime, any good or bad deed. Then why did his life have such a heartbreaking grievous end?
Mohidhar could not stay in that situation for long. He came out from Gokul's house. His mind was in turmoil. Only this thought occurred to him, again and again, that for which sin and whose sin that innocent child had to leave the Earth! Why did he come to the Earth for such a little time? While thinking all these he somehow came to his room and sat down on the chair. Suddenly a wave of electric current seemed to pass through his head. He pressed his head with both his hands.
It seemed the black curtain in front of his eyes gradually moved away. The vision seen in the dream drifted again in front of him. His whole body trembled.
Slowly he started to think that it was not just a dream. The dream was an irrefutable command of the Omnipotent. He wanted to explain a lot to Mohidhar through that dream. Now the reasons for the child's untimely death seemed to become clear to Mohidhar gradually. He understood that the child is not responsible for his own death, not at all. Totally responsible were the men who came to the Earth before him.
The terrible greed and tremendous irresponsibility of the human beings are going on fatally injuring the Earth every day every moment. If this Earth stops existing, gets destroyed, then these innumerable human beings who are consistently proclaiming that they are the best among all the creatures, will not have any existence. There are so many deaths, so many destructions, so many killings and calamities - still, the persons, submerged in the slime of selfishness up to the neck - are not becoming conscious.
But the death of the child displayed in front of Mohidhar's eyes - all the scenes one after another like a film. He tried to convince everyone again and again that our limitless greed and aggressive demands made us unhappy.
As desires have become boundless, so men also have become extremely unhappy. Nothing can give man happiness and satisfaction, though the best way to make himself and others happy is to lessen one's demands and longings. First of all, this thought has to be transmitted to ourselves that money is not the greatest thing, not at all, can ever be. As whatever money is earned can be earned from the Earth only and is destroyed again on the Earth. A person cannot earn money in the same manner throughout his whole life, and in the same way, no one can give monetary help to a poor, needy person throughout his whole life. If the wise, noble and memorable persons, whose guidance we follow in our life, would have donated only money and property in charity - then their ability to give financial help would have finished someday. As a result, men would have forgotten their charity also. But Jesus Christ, Hazrat Muhammad, Goutam Buddha or Sri Krishna had given men the wisdom attained by their meditation and invaluable advice. That wisdom and advice have inspired innumerable human beings throughout the world; have guided them in their path of life. If these Holy men would have wanted to influence the men of the Earth and see them as their followers by giving them money and wealth, then they might have had some followers temporarily, but in the way, for ages, countless men have adopted their philosophy of life, followed their opinion and advice - would never have happened.
Right and true thoughts are really valuable. The actual truth and the wise thoughts attained by hard labour and dedication are genuinely valuable on the Earth, while contemplating all these Mohidhar gradually became totally absorbed in his thoughts. He went on thinking - there are so many planets in the solar system which are much bigger than the planet Earth in size and area. For ages, to travel to these planets and to find out if there is the existence of life, many countries of the Earth are using thousands of scientists' talent, hard work, time and spending an unlimited amount of money. Yet whatever is known is very little in proportion. If a little portion of so much time and money spent could have been used for righteously utilizing, protecting and preserving the immense wealth of the Earth, then the Earth would have been the Heaven in reality. Because the Earth is a very quiet and peaceful planet! To fulfil the requirements of the animal world our Creator has arranged all the ingredients with great care in the water, on the land, under the Earth. There is only one difference between the greatest creature man with the other animals. Whatever the other animals collected from the Earth are only needed by them to live their life, not for anything else. But the most intelligent creature man is destroying the purity and peace of the Earth only to satisfy his greed.
Only for the satisfaction of one's own self and own happiness men are going on destroying all the treasures of the Earth. They are inviting every moment the ruin of the animal world. Then can these foolish, self-destructive and extremely careless about the danger going to occur in near future - creatures called human beings be actually designated as the most intelligent creatures? How can one say that man is the truth above everything? It is said that a mad man also understands his own well-being. Mankind is inferior to them also! No, it cannot be true!
Mohidhar sat straight on his chair. His eyes showed firm resolution. His jaws hardened. Looking at the window he said -
"Earth is the ultimate truth above everything
There is no doubt about it,
If man can understand it earlier
He will be the gainer."
