Mohidhar was sitting unmindfully looking at the window. He was feeling a little dejected. A lot of questions were creating a great disturbance in his mind. He had started a very difficult project - creating the "Statue of Mother Earth" or creating the idol of Mother Dharitri (another name of Earth). Mohidhar laughed a little on his own as soon as the word Dharitri came to his mind. The Earth is all enduring Dharitri and his wife's name is also Dharitri. The Earth is enduring the ruthless greed of human beings with such great patience, and witnessing silently the game of self-destruction by mankind. Whereas his wife, everyday, through every work is trying to prove how insignificant and worthless Mohidhar is as a human being. His wife's life is totally destroyed after Dharitri got married to Mohidhar.
While he was absorbed in these thoughts, he heard the tune of a song. He remembered something else in this connection. A few days back while he and Sambit were discussing various topics sitting in the Headmaster's room, Sambit showed him a picture on his mobile phone. Sometime ago when a terrible fire was creating havoc in the Amazon forest of Brazil, in order to save his life from the dangerous fire, a tiger plunged into the river and grasped a Brazilian Soldier for fear of his life. No, not with any brutality, but with a great yearning to be saved! Showing him the photo Sambit asked, "What do you think of this picture?" Mohidhar answered with a smile, "seeing the picture I can think of only one the thing that a fierce man-eater animal of the forest which is expected to pounce on any man whenever it sees him, is embracing a man to save his own life forgetting all ferocity with the sense that its life may be saved if it takes refuge with him! If an insensible animal of the forest can realize this, then why man - the most intelligent creature on Earth is attacking the Earth, his one and only shelter with so much savagery, to destroy it!
While thinking about all these he saw at a little distance from their house, a Baul- folk singer or a mystic minstrel was singing a song while walking. When he came nearer, Mohidhar could hear the words of the song clearly. The Baul was singing:-
My whole life I spent
Searching for heaven,
Could not find it.
But found that
This Earth is the abode of
Both hope and light.
Mohhidhar jumped up in excitement. He too was thinking about this topic for the past few days - what is Heaven? Is there actually a place called Heaven? Is it possible to reach there? While living on Earth, is it possible to get the answers to all questions regarding Heaven and Hell? He called the Baul quickly. He came and stood in the yard. Mohidhar summoned him inside his chamber of worship where no one was allowed to enter. Occasionally Dharitri entered to disturb his meditation and that too forcibly, without being invited by Mohhidhar. That moment of getting Mohidhar's invitation had not come in Dharitri's life yet. Being called by Mohidhar, the Baul was quite surprised to enter the room. He had a timid and shy smile on his face. He showed his respect for Mohidhar by touching his forehead with his palms and doing pranam. Mohidhar also greeted him in return and said in a concerned tone, "Please sing the song which you were singing again." Baul asked with a humble smile, "Have you liked it? You want to hear it again?"
"Yes, oh yes! I want to hear". Mohidhar said in a hurry. The Baul started to sing. Closing his eyes Mohidhar continued to hear attentively. His eyes were filled with tears. Wiping his eyes with the corner of his kurta he asked in an emotional voice, "What is your name brother?" Baul said, "Swapan, but no one calls me by that name. Some say Swapan Baul, and others say mad Swapan." Mohidhar was looking at Swapan but his unmindful glance seemed to have been lost far away. He spoke in a voice that seemed to be coming from far away. "Swapan means the dream and the man who chases dreams are bound to be mad. You are mad Swapan and I am mad Mohi" - he started to laugh loudly. A very much ashamed Swapan said with folded hands, "What do you say, Sir? I am not educated and earn my livelihood by singing only, that's why I am called mad - and you are a respected teacher, you have trained and brought up so many students, you have such great wisdom!" "Do you know me?"
Mohidhar asked him in a surprised tone. "Yes Sir, I know you," said Swapan Baul smiling.
"Well Swapan, you move around singing songs. Sometimes you manage to get your food, sometimes you don't. Don't you get angry or sad? Don't you think why are you born on the Earth?"
"No Sir, not at all. He, who has sent me to the Earth has bestowed intellect on me, so I can travel far away, meet so many people. He has given me a nice voice, so I sing and express my gratitude towards Him through my songs. And with these two eyes, I see the beauty of the Earth to my heart's content. So many rivers, mountains, forests, so many trees, flowers, birds of different colours and butterflies - all these are here. After the terrible suffering of the hot summer, days of rain come down from the thick black clouds of the sky like God's blessings. When winter comes and spring follows the nature beams. It looks so bright with so many colours and it seems that God is smiling from his hidden abode. My eyes are filled with tears whenever I think of His kindness, and so I start singing heartily -
In this workshop of
Colour and senses
How many connoisseurs
Do you get?
The Earth is the abode of
Hope and light.
The Earth is the abode of
Hope and light."
Mohidhar stood up hearing Swapan's words and song. Embracing him ecstatically Mohidhar said, "Yes, I am fortunate to get you, I need this type of man! One who is humble as he has full of gratitude towards our Creator and loves His Creation - The Earth wholeheartedly! You will be able to do it."
Swapan was greatly encouraged by Mohidhar's words. He said, "Tell me, sir, what I can do? I don't have any other ability except for creating songs."
"With your songs, you will explain to everyone that man should refrain from destruction, from plundering the wealth of the Earth fiercely with human greed.
We must love the Earth, conserve her natural treasures. We have heard about Heaven from ages that there are infinite happiness, pleasure and wealth. We have learnt this only from books or through word-of-mouth. Till this day no one came back after travelling in heaven and was able to give its description or write about it. But the way our Creator has adorned the Earth with unlimited beauty and wealth, if we can keep the Earth beautiful with our love and care, then Heaven can be created here, and the Earth can be beaming with heavenly beauty. The Creator has given us his own creation as a gift with great care, but if we destroy that creation, why should He give us the right to reach the kingdom of Heaven seen in imagination? The easiest way is to adorn the Earth with heavenly splendour and become a suitable aspirant to reach the Heavenly Kingdom of our Imagination. He has given us only one right, He has filled the infinitely beautiful Earth with all the treasures to fulfil all our needs but that should not be ransacked and destroyed by men. Those treasures should be utilized and preserved with great care in a disciplined manner - this is the only prerogative of human beings. God has wholeheartedly bestowed the planet Earth upon human beings and in return, He wants only this much. We are not even interested or willing to do that, though we are performing innumerable religious rituals to be able to go to an imaginary kingdom called Heaven. The allegiance, the labour, the money, and the patience which we spend for all these activities are so much that if we would have spent one-fourth of these to keep the Earth beautiful, then literally the Earth would have turned into Heaven.
"Yes sir, you are absolutely right. God, who has created us, has not told us that we should destroy the possessions of the Earth-like forests, mountains, rivers, seas etc. for our self-interest and greed. He has not given this power to anyone. He has only been given the right to enjoy the beauty of the Earth to the heart's content, to cherish it, and to protect the beauty of the Earth. Isn't it, Sir?"
"Yes Swapan, you are right. The Creator has created the Earth with great love and care. There are so many other planets in this 'Solar System'. On those planets there is no water, the weather is unbearably hot, life cannot flourish there as there is a lack of a suitable environment and condition. But on the Earth - there are so many creatures, and we, the human beings are the greatest creatures. This shows how much he loves the Earth. We have not created the Earth; we don't have the power to do so. We have received the Earth as an unparalleled gift from the Creator. But with the gift comes the duty and responsibility of protecting it. It is our holy duty and responsibility to keep the Earth beautiful and pollution-free and also to organize and preserve all the treasures of the Earth. We have to do this first. What do you say, Swapan?"
"Exactly, so Sir." said Swapan enthusiastically. "If we cannot do this much, then those who may come after us or those who might have come even after them, will not be able to come here at all due to our negligence and irresponsibility, the Earth will not remain suitable for human habitation. And we, the people of today will be responsible for it even though we say that we are the greatest creatures on Earth. That's why we should not delay any more. I shall create a song and as per your order, I shall sing it everywhere. I shall move around and tell everyone what you have taught me. This will be my real job. What do you say, sir? Won't I be able to do it?"
With a delighted face, Mohidhar grasped Swapan's hand and said, "You will definitely be able to do it. But you earn your livelihood by singing, so how will you manage?"
“Don't worry about it, Sir. Nowadays there are many work opportunities. I shall find a job somehow and in my free time, I shall do this work, Sir. Well, I'll take my leave now Sir.”
Swapan joined his palms in pranam and stood up.
Suddenly Mohidhar remembered something and taking out a two-thousand - rupee - note from the pocket of his Kurta gave it to Swapan. He went on staring at Mohidhar and tears filled his eyes. Wiping the tears from his eyes Swapan left the room quickly. Mohidhar looked at the door for some time and then sat on his chair with a strange smile of content on his face. He spoke in a very low voice, "At last I have found another man who has understood my words, who loves the Earth wholeheartedly. I needed this kind of man. Through his songs, he will convey the message of loving the Earth to mankind.
He will say -
Whatever we need
We get from the Earth
So Earth is above everything
Beyond it there is nothing."
